Digital Radiography

Digital Radiography at Belur Dental Clinic

At Belur Dental Clinic, we utilize the latest in digital radiography technology to provide our patients with fast, accurate, and efficient diagnostic imaging. Digital X-rays allow us to assess your dental health with greater precision while minimizing exposure to radiation. Our advanced digital radiographs include OPG (Orthopantomogram) and PSP (Photostimulable Phosphor) imaging systems, ensuring we have the right tools to evaluate your oral health comprehensively.

What is Digital Radiography?

Digital radiography uses digital sensors instead of traditional film to capture images of the inside of your mouth and teeth. This modern approach provides several advantages over conventional X-rays, including quicker image processing, enhanced image quality, and significantly lower radiation exposure. With digital X-rays, your images are instantly available, allowing our team to diagnose and treat any issues more efficiently.

Types of Digital Radiography We Offer

At Belur Dental Clinic, we offer two types of advanced digital radiography to ensure comprehensive diagnostic imaging: OPG and PSP.

  1. OPG (Orthopantomogram)

An OPG or panoramic X-ray is a wide-view image of your entire mouth, including your teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. It is typically used to assess the overall health of the teeth and jaw, detect bone abnormalities, and plan for procedures such as extractions, implants, or braces. OPG provides a complete picture of your oral health in a single image, which can be used to:

  • Detect Wisdom Teeth: OPG is ideal for viewing the position of wisdom teeth, which may require extraction if they are impacted.
  • Evaluate Jawbone Health: The panoramic view can reveal jawbone issues, such as cysts, tumors, or bone loss caused by gum disease.
  • Plan for Orthodontics: OPG is used to assess jaw alignment and identify any abnormalities that could affect orthodontic treatment.
  • Identify Tooth Eruptions: It helps in assessing the development and eruption of teeth, particularly in children or young adults.
  • Evaluate Dental Implants: OPG can be used to evaluate bone density and structure before planning for dental implants.

The panoramic nature of OPG allows us to visualize both upper and lower jaw structures in a single image, making it easier to spot any concerns that might not be visible in smaller, localized X-rays.

  1. PSP (Photostimulable Phosphor)

PSP digital radiography uses phosphor plates to capture images, which are then scanned by a digital sensor to create a detailed image. These plates are inserted into the mouth in a similar manner to traditional X-rays but are much more comfortable for patients. PSP imaging is a versatile, high-quality option that provides excellent resolution and accuracy for more localized dental assessments.

PSP digital radiographs are used for:

  • Detailed Tooth Examination: PSP is ideal for capturing detailed images of individual teeth and detecting issues like cavities, cracks, or infections.
  • Root Canal Assessments: This method is perfect for viewing the intricate details of root canals and surrounding structures to guide treatment.
  • Gum Disease Monitoring: PSP allows for the assessment of bone loss around the teeth, helping us monitor the progression of gum disease.
  • Endodontic Diagnosis: When performing root canals, PSP radiographs provide critical information about the tooth structure and infection extent.
  • Orthodontic Monitoring: PSP helps track tooth movement during orthodontic treatment and checks the progress of braces or aligners.

PSP offers high-definition images with minimal radiation exposure, making it an excellent choice for monitoring and diagnosing a wide range of dental conditions.

Benefits of Digital Radiography

  • Reduced Radiation Exposure: Digital radiography significantly reduces the amount of radiation compared to traditional X-rays, making it a safer option for patients.
  • Instant Image Availability: With digital imaging, your results are available immediately, allowing for faster diagnoses and treatment planning.
  • Enhanced Image Quality: Digital images can be adjusted for clarity, brightness, and contrast, providing more detailed and accurate information about your oral health.
  • Convenient Storage and Sharing: Digital X-rays can be easily stored and shared with other dental specialists if needed, ensuring a more coordinated approach to your care.
  • Eco-Friendly: Digital radiography eliminates the need for chemical processing, reducing environmental waste and the need for physical film storage.
  • Non-Invasive and Comfortable: The process of capturing digital X-rays is quick, comfortable, and non-invasive, offering a more pleasant experience for patients, especially those who may feel anxious about traditional X-rays.

What to Expect During a Digital X-ray Procedure

  1. Positioning: For OPG, you will be asked to stand or sit in front of the machine with your head supported and the X-ray unit positioned around your face. For PSP, we will place the phosphor plate inside your mouth.
  2. Exposure: The machine will take a few seconds to capture the image. For OPG, the machine rotates around your head to capture a full panoramic view. For PSP, the sensor captures detailed images of specific teeth or areas.
  3. Review and Analysis: Once the image is captured, it is displayed on a computer screen, where we will analyze the results and discuss the findings with you.
